Clive Hinton is an Australian lawyer who was admitted to the bar in Australia in 1973 and became a partner of the Sydney law firm Phillips Fox. He studied law at Sydney University, earning Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees.
Education
Hinton studied law at Sydney University, earning a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws. The University of Sydney is Australia's oldest university, and its law school offered legal examinations from 1855 but did not begin full legal instruction until 1890.
The Faculty of Law was inaugurated in 1855 and began its work in 1859, though for decades it focused on examination rather than teaching. The turning point came with the bequest of John Henry Challis, which funded the first Challis Chair of Law. Pitt Cobbett was appointed to that chair in 1890 as the first dean, marking the start of the law school as it developed afterward.
Career
Hinton was admitted to the bar in Australia in 1973, which marked his entry into the Australian legal profession. He later practised in Sydney as a partner of Phillips Fox.
Phillips Fox was an Australian law firm whose origins trace back to 1864, when it began as P.D. Phillips. By the 2000s it was regarded as one of the largest firms in Australasia. The firm then allied itself with the global firm DLA Piper and adopted the name DLA Phillips Fox.
The Australian operation was absorbed into DLA Piper in 2011, when DLA Piper opened for business in Australia and closed DLA Phillips Fox.
