Masaru Kohno was born on January 20, 1962, in Tokyo, Japan. He is the son of Eijiro and Miyuki (Nagasaka) Kohno.
Masaru received a Bachelor of Laws from Sophia University in 1985, a Master of Arts from Yale University in 1987, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1994.
Masaru Kohno is currently the director of the Research Institute of Contemporary Japanese Systems at Waseda University. He also serves as research affiliate for the Waseda Institute for Advanced Studies and as an advisor for the university’s International Affairs Division. Before joining Waseda, he taught at the University of British Columbia from 1994 to 1998, at Aoyama Gakuin University from 1998 to 2003, and he was a national fellow at the Hoover Institution from 1996 to 1997.
Outside Waseda, Kohno now serves as a visiting researcher at the National Diet Library of Japan and as senior officer at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Since 2009 he has appeared regularly on Fuji-TV news programs as an expert commentator.
