Upon finishing education at the University of Texas at Austin in 1973, Abbott worked as an associate professor at Northern Illinois University until he was promoted to a professor and director, undergraduate studies in English in 1984. Soon 2 years after he tied his career to acting until 1994. Abbot also worked for many other organizations as a consultant such as National Endowment for the Humanities, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, American Philosophical Society, Princeton University Library and Huntington Library.
While serving in the United States Army in Medical Service Corps he received lieutenant rank in 1968.
