(More than twenty biographies of Leo Tolstoy have expresse...)
More than twenty biographies of Leo Tolstoy have expressed widely differing views of the author and his wife, Sonya. Cynthia Asquith's contribution to the reading public's understanding of the great man perpetually suffused by "ethical convulsions" is, obviously, partial to Countess Sonya Tolstoy.

Cynthia Mary Evelyn Asquith was born in the family of the Scottish Conservative politician Hugo Richard Charteris, 11th Earl of Wemyss and famous society hostess Mary Constance Wyndham.
Cynthia Asquith (Charteris at the time) was educated at home by governesses. While traveling with her mother she usually was tough things that were not accessible in the countryside estates of her family.
In May 1918 Asquith started nursing at the Winchcombe hospital situated not far from Stanway House, the estate of her family. She liked this job even though it was rather demanding for efficiency and attention to detail.
In 1918 Asquith’s husband returned from the war too ill to work, and Asquith took a position as secretary to J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, organizing his social and personal life until his death in 1937. Asquith’s wide circle of friends included many literary figures, including L. P. Hartley, Hugh Walpole, D. H. Lawrence, Algernon Blackwood, and Arthur Machen. She collected from them many mystery and ghost stories and compiled anthologies of their work. Asquith also wrote ghost stories, children’s books, biographies, and novels. Best known for her Diaries, 1915 - 1918, the book began with a gift from Alfred Duff Cooper, who gave Asquith a diary in 1915, into which she wrote an entry each day.
Asquith died on March 31, 1960 of meningitis at the Acland Nursing Home in Oxford.

1947Although Asquith’s family was in such a political environment, she was not interested in politics (including the suffragist movement, in the context of which she believed that militancy was counterproductive). Even during World War II, she still believed in anti-Semitic prejudices of her class and generation. In later years she was “implacably right-wing” and anti-American.
Asquith was very loyal to her friends and friendship was one of the most important parts of her life.
Lady Cynthia Charteris married Herbert Asquith on July 28, 1910. They had three sons: John, Michael and Simon.
