(Excerpt from Composition and Digestibility of Corn Ensila...)
Excerpt from Composition and Digestibility of Corn Ensilage, Cow Pea Ensilage, Soja Bean Ensilage, and Corn-Fodder During the day the steers were attended almost constantly, and the dung was taken up from the drop at frequent intervals by means of a spatula and a small scoop and kept in covered vessels. During the night from about 10 o'clock p. M. Till 5 o'clock a. M. The steers were left alone, but usually they lay quiet, and it was a common thing to find them at 5 a. M. Still lying, and each with several pounds of dung in the drop which they had voided without rising. Great care was taken from the beginning to the end Of the experiment that the drop should be kept clean from foreign matter and that no dung should be lost. It may seem to some that it is not possible to let dung fall Upon a clean, smooth floor and take it up again with a high degree of accuracy. Experiments were made to determine this. About 35 pounds of dung were allowed to fall in small quantities from a height of four feet, each being taken up before the next small quantity was allowed to fall. In two trials the average loss was one-fourth of an ounce. In three trials on 34 pounds Of a different sample and on a different day the average loss was one third of an 'ounce. The dung was then simply transferred from one vessel to another, about the same length of time being used as had been taken in the other trials, and it was found that the loss of weight by the evaporation of moisture was one-fourth Of an ounce. Evidently this method of collecting the dung admits of a higher percentage of accuracy than many of the determinations in its subsequent analysis. Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Excerpt from How Greece Can Produce More Food A wise Chr...)
Excerpt from How Greece Can Produce More Food A wise Christian statesman once said that a nation should keep its promises and preserve its honor, even tho it perish in the effort. He was a practical statesman as well as an idealist; for it was he who first suggested that the American Red Cross Commission to Greece should undertake, along with its program of emergency relief, an agricultural program, with a view to increasing the food production of the country and thus permanently benefiting the entire population. An Agricultural Department was accordingly made a part of the Commission, and an American scientist who had won world-wide dis tinction for his practical success in applying to the problem of food production the results of his investigation of the soil, was secured as head of this Department. Major Hopkins has traveled extensively in Greece, has had analyses made of the soils of various regions, and has conducted experiments whose purpose is to enable the farmer to pro duce larger crops as the reward of his labors. This report of the Department presents the simple truth regarding the conditions which now exist in Greece, and recommends some practical scientific methods for greatly improving these conditions. It is designed to serve Greece and her people, and this result will be attained if the recommendations are put into practice. This booklet is presented not only to farmers and landowners, but also to merchants, bankers, teachers, and statesmen; for it is only by the intelligent efforts and influence of all that food production can be largely and permanently increased. Cyril George Hopkins was born on July 22, 1866 in Chatfield, Minnesota, United States. He was the son of George Edwin and Caroline (Cudney) Hopkins, and was one of a family of nine children.
On this farm and in Deuel County, Dakota Territory, whither the family moved in 1880, Hopkins grew to manhood, receiving his early education in district schools. Before and after he entered the Agricultural College at Brookings, South Dakota, he taught in country schools and spent his vacations on his father's farm, where he always carried his full share of the work. He graduated from college in 1890, received the degree of Master of Science (1894) and that of Ph. D. (1898) from Cornell University, and spent another year (1899-1900) in graduate work at the University of Gottingen.
Hopkins' earlier scientific work was in chemistry, and in connection with this subject and that of pharmacy he held positions at the South Dakota Agricultural College. He also served as experiment station chemist in Cornell University, and at the University of Illinois.
In 1900 he was made professor of agronomy and soil fertility at the University of Illinois. This position he held to the end of his life, becoming vice-director of the experiment station in 1903.
Early in his career he envisioned a permanent agriculture, based upon the maintenance of soil productivity, to further the realization of which he planned and carried forward an investigation of Illinois soils along three lines. The first comprised classification and mapping of the soils of the state; the next a chemical study of the different soils with the thought that the resulting data would reveal something of their productive capacity as well as their needs; and the third, an investigation, by means of field plots, of various methods of soil management.
Besides many papers he published Soil Fertility and Permanent Agriculture (1910); The Story of the Soil, from the Basis of Absolute Science and Real Life (1911); and The Farm That Won't Wear Out (1913).
When in 1918 a request came to him from the Red Cross to take charge of the agricultural rehabilitation of Greece, he regarded it as a call to duty. Given a year's leave of absence from the University, and commissioned a major in the Red Cross, he worked desperately to complete the necessary investigations and round out a program for the restoration of the depleted Grecian soils. Upon embarking for home he became violently ill, and was transferred to the British military hospital at Gibraltar, where he died.
