Dakota Johnson's maternal grandmother’s roots are one half Swedish, one quarter German, and one quarter Norwegian. Her other ancestry is English, with some Welsh, Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), Irish, Scottish, other German, and remote Dutch and French Huguenot.
Dakota Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, in Austin, Texas, the United States, to actor parents Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. Her parents married in January 1976 and filed for divorce in July that year. They again reunited in early 1989 and got married again, which lasted till 1996. She has six half-siblings among them two are from her mother’s side and four from her father's side.
Her maternal grandmother Tippi Hedren is an award-winning American actress and former model who has also garnered attention as an animal rights activist. Many of her extended family members are into acting including her maternal half-aunt Tracy Griffith, former stepfather Antonio Banderas and paternal half-sibling Jesse Johnson.
As a child of divorce, Johnson would spend two weeks with her dad on his Colorado ranch, learning to ride horses, build fires, shoot guns, and ride a motorcycle. Then she’d be shuffled off to her mom’s house in Los Angeles, where she discovered her love of movies. She describes her mother’s house as having a huge vault with shelves upon shelves of films in alphabetical order.
As a child, she was a dancing enthusiast. When she was 12 years old she developed an interest in modeling after going through a photoshoot for Teen Vogue along with other children of different celebrities.
