Ethnicity: Chris Hemsworth's maternal grandfather was a Dutch immigrant. The rest his ancestry is approximately 11/32 English, 9/32 Irish, 1/16th German, and 1/16th Scottish.

Chris Hemsworth was born on August 11, 1983, in Melbourne, Australia to Craig Hemsworth and Leonie (née van Os) as their second child among three sons. His older brother, Luke, is probably best known for his role as Ashley Stubbs in Westworld. Meanwhile, Liam made his name playing Gale in The Hunger Games franchise and romantic films like The Last Song. His father is a social-services counselor while his mother is an English teacher. His parents raised him and his brothers in Melbourne and in the remote interior of Australia called Outback, in Northern Territory. He has stated, "My earliest memories were on the cattle stations up in the Outback, and then we moved back to Melbourne and then back out there and then back again. Certainly, most of my childhood was in Melbourne but probably my most vivid memories were up there [in Bulman] with crocodiles and buffalo. Very different walks of life."

Education

Hemsworth studied at the well-known coeducational government secondary college Heathmont College in Heathmont, Victoria. After a few years, his family relocated to the south-southeast of Melbourne, Victoria, in an island called Phillip Island. Chris also studied American English at Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors in Sydney, Australia.

Career

After college, Hemsworth began his way to fame by filming in several television series. Hemsworth started his career by appearing in two episodes of fantasy television series Guinevere Jones as King Arthur in the year 2002.

Hemsworth’s claim to fame is a stint in the Aussie soap Home and Away, which is aired across the world. Originally auditioning for the role of Robbie Hunter (which ultimately went to Jason Smith), he was rejected but later recalled as a troubled personal trainer Kim Hyde. His first on-screen appearance as Hyde happened on February 17, 2004, and he ended up playing the part for 3 ½ years till July 3, 2007, featuring in 185 episodes before leaving the show to concentrate on his film career. The role of Hyde gave him name, fame, and recognition fetching him several award nominations. He won the Most Popular New Male Talent award at the Logie Awards in 2005.

Hemsworth participated in the Australian light entertainment reality show Dancing with the Stars Australia in its fifth season that premiered on September 26, 2006. His partner in the show was professional dancer Abbey Ross. He was eliminated being sixth on November 7, 2006.

It didn't take long for the actor to make it onto the American silver screen when he appeared in J.J. Abrams' 2009 remake of Star Trek. His part as Captain James T. Kirk's dad may have been small, but it was enough of a performance to lead to a huge Hollywood opportunity. Hemsworth originally auditioned for the role of James Kirk, which went to Chris Pine but was rejected because director JJ Abrams stated the 6’3″ actor was too tall for the part. However, he called Hemsworth into his office to read for the part of George and gave him the role after he had only read a few lines.

Hemsworth's first starring role came with the American independent crime-thriller flick Ca$h that released in March 2010. Thereafter, he went on to prove his versatility playing varied roles with great style.

Chris' big break came in the form of a hammer-wielding Marvel superhero named Thor. Hemsworth auditioned for the lead and went up against the super stiff competition, including younger brother Liam. But director Kenneth Brannagh chose the older Hemsworth to play the Norse god in the 2011 flick opposite Oscar-winners Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. This box-office success elevated Hemsworth to A-List status. Hemsworth earned much international acclaim for essaying Thor for which he gained 20 pounds of muscle. The film emerged as the 15th highest-grossing flick of 2011 and earned him several nominations including the Teen Choice Awards and People's Choice Awards. His character continued in The Avengers, alongside other Marvel superheroes played by Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). The film not only came out as the highest grosser of the year but also peaked as the third highest-grosser worldwide.

Chris also starred in the horror film The Cabin in the Woods, which was shot shortly after the release of Star Trek but went unreleased until 2012. Although Avengers wasn’t released until 2012, Joss Whedon was hired to direct in 2010. Whedon was previously involved with Cabin in the Woods as a co-writer and had met Hemsworth during the casting process. The two reunited when Hemsworth auditioned for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he ultimately got Thor, Whedon initially wanted Hemsworth for the role of Captain America.

The Avengers’ and the 2012 hit American dark fantasy film Snow White and the Huntsman where Hemsworth played the character of Eric, the Huntsman, fetched him a Teen Choice Award in the category of Choice Summer Movie Star: Male. He reprised the role of Eric in The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016).

The year 2013 saw Hemsworth reprising the role of Thor in Thor: The Dark World, sequel to 2011's Thor; giving voiceover as George Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness, sequel to 2009’s Star Trek; and portraying real-life character of James Hunt, the 1976 Formula 1 World Champion, in sports drama film Rush.

In 2015, Hemsworth played a convicted computer hacker, Nicholas Hathaway, in action thriller mystery film Blackhat; tickled the funny bones as Stone Crandall in the comedy flick Vacation; and played Owen Chase in adventure drama In the Heart of the Sea apart from playing Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Hemsworth has also landed prominent roles in reboots of popular '80s films: In 2015 he played the brother-in-law of Ed Helms' Rusty Griswold in Vacation, and the following year, he appeared in Ghostbusters. He essayed the role of Kevin Beckman, the handsome but dumb secretary of Ghostbusters. The comedy film Ghostbusters was released in July 2016. The film won him Favorite Movie Actor award at the Kids' Choice Awards on March 11, 2017. Between his debut role in Home and Away and Ghostbusters, Hemsworth had yet to use his natural Australian accent in a film. He admits that when he began filming Ghostbusters it felt unnatural not to change his accent. His voice “became another prop” and he was much more conscious of how he sounded.

On November 4, 2016, American superhero film Doctor Strange emerged as a blockbuster garnering critical acclaim. The film saw Hemsworth reprising the character of Thor in its mid-credits scene.

In early 2018, Hemsworth starred as a United States Army captain in the war drama 12 Strong. A few weeks later, it was revealed he was joining the cast of another reboot, the sci-fi comedy Men in Black.

Hemsworth reprised his role as Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, released on 3 November 2017 in the United States and again in both the third and fourth Avengers films, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in 2018 and 2019 respectively. He is also set to star in a spin-off of the Men in Black series, titled Men in Black: International. Hemsworth was originally going to reprise his role as George Kirk in the fourth film of the rebooted Star Trek film series, but he left the project in August 2018 after contract negotiations fell through.

Chris Hemsworth and his brother Liam both serve as spokespeople for the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF). Hemsworth loves surfing and football. Surfing has been his teenage hobby which also became his past time until today. Chris shoulder injury prevented him from pursuing a football career. Hemsworth is a fan of Australian Rules Football, supporting the Western Bulldogs, who play out of Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL).
