Background

Ethnicity: Moretz's ancestry is mostly German and English. Chloë’s patrilineal line can be traced back to Christian Moretz, who was born, c. 1714, in Sachsen, Germany.

Chloë Grace Moretz was born on February 10, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia, the United States, to Teri Duke, a nurse practitioner, and McCoy Moretz, a plastic surgeon. She has four brothers: Ethan, Trevor, Collin, and Brandon. Her parents got divorced when she was 12 years old. Later on, Chloe revealed in an interview that the divorce took a toll on her and that forgiving her father seems far-fetched.

With a nurse and a plastic surgeon as parents, it wasn't a given that Chloë Grace Moretz would somehow become a child actor by the age of seven. It was through her older brother Trevor, who was accepted into Professional Performing Arts High School in New York in 2001 when he was 15, that got the ball rolling for the little girl. Along with her mother Teri, and Trevor, Chloë, then four, moved to New York from Atlanta, Georgia, where she was born.

She helped her brother read his lines, and in turn, he gave her a few tips on how to act. This was the spark of interest in acting that led Moretz to audition for movies at the age of seven.

Education

Chloë Grace Moretz attended Laurel Springs School and did the distance learning program. Onset Moretz had a studio teacher who schooled her.

Career

Chloë Grace Moretz was inspired to become an actress by her brother Trevor, who studied acting at Professional Performing Arts High School in New York. He began coaching Chloë and in 2004 she made her TV debut when she was offered to play a recurring character in two episodes of CBS crime series The Guardian. Shortly after, she made her movie debut in the small budget film Heart of the Beholder (2005), a story about a family that opened the first video rental store in 1980, which won several awards at film festivals. This was followed by a small role in Family Plan (2005) as Young Charlie.

Later that year, Chloë Grace Moretz gained recognition when she appeared in the major motion picture The Amityville Horror (2005), the remake of the 1979 famous movie of the same name, playing the daughter of Ryan Reynolds. Chloë Grace Moretz received her first award nomination for her performance in the latter. She received two more nominations in 2007, for a recurring role in the TV series Desperate Housewives and her role in Big Momma's House 2 (2006).

In 2008 Chloë had a minor setback when she voiced the entire character of Penny in the animated Disney feature Bolt before it was decided Miley Cyrus, then Disney's biggest star would play the part. It didn't affect her career, however, as the same year, she again received two nominations, this time for her voice-over role in the DVD My Friends Tigger & Pooh and her recurring role in the TV series Dirty Sexy Money.

In 2010 Chloë Grace Moretz appeared as Hit-Girl in director Matthew Vaughn's action film Kick-Ass (2010), based on the comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Although her role in the violent action film engendered some controversy, she received widespread critical acclaim for her portrayal. Moretz trained with Jackie Chan's stunt crew for three months prior to filming Kick-Ass and did most of her own stunts in the film. Also that year she played Abby, a 12-year-old vampire, in Let Me In (2010), the UK/US remake of the Swedish film Let Me In (2008), which was released on October 1, 2010. She played Ann Sliger in the crime thriller Texas Killing Fields (2011), released on October 14, 2011.

In 2010 she was nominated for her work in the motion picture 500 Days of Summer (2009), then in 2011 she received three nominations: for Let Me In, Kick-Ass and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, finally winning the award for the latter. However, she won a Phoenix Film Critics Society Award as Breakout Performance and two MTV Awards (Best Breakout Star and Biggest Badass Star) for her work in Kick-Ass. For her outstanding performance as a vampire child in Let Me In and well as for her work in Kick-Ass, she won a 2011 Empire Award in the UK and a Breakthrough Artist Award from the Austin Film Critics Association. Chloë Grace Moretz also won a Saturn Award for Let Me In.

Chloë next played Isabelle in Martin Scorsese's Hugo (2011), a film adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Hugo, which was nominated for 11 Oscars, co-starred Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Helen McCrory. Moretz then starred in Hick (2011), an adaptation of the novel by Andrea Portes. She was in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows (2012), based on the iconic TV series Dark Shadows (1966), playing the role of Carolyn Stoddard, a rebellious teenage daughter.

In 2013 she reprised her role as Hit-Girl in the sequel Kick-Ass 2 (2013), which received mixed reviews, but once again her performance was highly praised. The same year Chloë Grace Moretz also appeared in a short segment in Movie 43 (2013) and played the title character in Carrie (2013), a remake of Carrie (1976), based on a Stephen King story and directed by Kimberly Peirce. In January 2013 Moretz was chosen to play Mia in the film adaptation of Gayle Forman's If I Stay (2014), which was released in August 2014. On January 16, 2014, it was announced Moretz would appear in an off-Broadway show directed by Steven Soderbergh entitled The Library.

In 2014 Chloë was in six films: a cameo as a newspaper girl in Muppets Most Wanted (2014), the female lead of prostitute Teri alongside Denzel Washington in The Equalizer (2014) and teenage party girl Annika with Keira Knightley and Sam Rockwell in Laggies (2014). In December she played the role of a very young Hollywood actress with a scandalous reputation Jo-Ann Ellis alongside Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria (2014).

In April it was announced that Chloë would be playing the lead role of Cassie Sullivan in The 5th Wave (2016), another adaptation similar to The Hunger Games (2012), alongside Nick Robinson and Alex Roe. It was later announced that Chloë would play the lead female role of Digger in the movie adaptation of Sam Munson's novel November Criminals. Moretz's character is the best friend of Addison Schacht, played by Ansel Elgort.

In 2016, she acted in the comedy film Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising where she played the role of Shelby, a freshman at the Phi Lamda sorority. Made on a budget of $35 million, the film grossed $108 million worldwide. Next, in 2018, Moretz starred in the horror film Suspiria, a remake of the 1977 film. She also appeared in the film Greta, in which she played a girl, who was kidnapped by a mentally ill woman. In 2019 Chloë Grace Moretz voiced the iconic character of Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family. In 2021 Moretz is set to appear in Tom & Jerry, and in Shadow in the Cloud.

In order to maintain a clear separation between her professional and personal life, Moretz does not invite her friends to film sets or premieres; she says it is easier for her to focus on work, and to relax with her friends when not working.
