Breeden studied at Southern Illinois University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. He continued his education at the University of Iowa and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985. Breeden became a Doctor of Philosophy after graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1988.
Breeden was a Teaching Assistant at Southern Illinois University in 1981-1983. He also was a Teaching Assistant at the University of Iowa in 1983-1985, and at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985-1988. He became a professor at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro in 1988-1991, and at Schreiner College, Kerrville, Texas in 1991 - 2005.
Since 2009, Breeden is a Parish Minister. Breeden has published four novels and ten books of poetry. He is also a translator of Beowulf, a contributor of columns to Independent Publisher, Audiobook Cafe, and the Internet publication Inkspot, a contributor of poems to magazines, including Poet Lore, Mid-American Review, Fine Madness, California Quarterly, Wormwood Review, and Boston Literary Review.
David Marion Breeden has been listed as a notable Parish minister, English language educator, writer by Marquis.
