Jonathan J. Bean was born on October 2, 1962, in Burlington, Vermont, United States. He is a son of Daniel Bean, a college professor, and Joanne Bean, a nurse.
Bean attended St. Michael’s College in 1984. Six years later he graduated from the University of Vermont with a Master of Arts degree. Four more years later he finally received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Ohio State University.
Bean started his teaching career at Southern Illinois University at the position of an assistant professor of history from 1995 to 1999, rising to an associate professor of history that year - the position which he currently holds. Bean is also a research fellow at the Independent Institute. Bean serves as an editor of the Institute book Race and Liberty in America: The Essential Reader. He was the Senior Editor for H-Business, an on-line journal for business historians.
Bean is the author of numerous books including Beyond the Broker State: Federal Policies Toward Small Business, 1936-1961 (1996) and Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration (2001). He is a contributor and author of scholarly articles, which have appeared in such periodicals as The Independent Review, Southern Illinois University Law Journal, Continuity, Business and Economic History, Journal of Policy History, Choice, Enterprise and Society, Business History Review, National Social Science Perspectives Journal, Ohio History, The Historian, Ohio History, Continuity, Business and Economic History, Choice, African American National Biography, American National Biography and the Encyclopedia of American Business History.
His popular articles, interviews and investigative work have appeared in various journals, magazines and online resources, such as Newsweek, Washington Times, Christian Science Monitor, National Review and Forbes.

In addition, Bean has been active in online education, starting with the scholarly network H-Business in 1990 and continuing through online instruction from the 1990s-present. He worked on the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Distance Education to align the university’s online courses with the Higher Learning Commission’s demand for real interaction between students and instructors. He has written a peer-reviewed an interactive text Opposing Viewpoints in U.S. History in 2018, the text makes use of primary sources, short videos and other elements to engage students in the reading and discussion of past controversies.

2001Bean has testified before the United States Senate on corruption in government contracting, consulted for the Japanese government, and served as an expert in court cases involving corporate litigation and a successful civil right challenge to discrimination by the Small Business Administration.
Bean is a member of the Business History Conference, the Economic and Business Historical Society, the National Association of Scholars and the Society for History in the Federal Government.
Bean is interested in reinterpreting American history from a classical, liberal perspective. He is fascinated by the continuing resilience of small business as a social, economic and political force in American life.
Bean is married to Alice Sicree since July 18, 1992. The couple has a daughter Joanna.
