BUCHANAN, David was born in 1779 in Montrose, Scotland.
His edition of Smith was an important pre-Ricardian commentary, which criticised various aspects of Smith’s work, including the theory of rent, in an able fashion. He developed an argument in favour of progressive taxation in the supplement to the edition His later Inquiry. contains a spirited critique of current taxation practices and an attack on the Ricardian theory of rent.
He was also a contributor to the Edinburgh Review and Encyclopaedia Britannica, 7th editio.
