Dawson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1930 and a Master of Science degree in 1931 from Drexel University. Three years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Ohio State University. Also David was given an hononary degree from Drexel University in 1947.
Dawson began his career as a teaching assistant at Ohio State University in 1930. Three years later he took a position of a research chemist at Krebs Pigments and Chemical Company. Then in 1935, David was appointed a research supervisor of pigments department at Eleuthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours & Company. In 1944, he held a position of an assistant director research and a director of sales in 1946 at the same company.
Also Dawson served as an assistant general manager at Eleuthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1948 to 1951. In 1951, he became an assistant general manager of fabrics and finishes department and an assistant general manager of textile fibers department in 1953 at that company. Since 1955, David was a director at Eleuthere Irenee du Pont de Nemours & Company.
Dawson was a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Chemical Society.
On August 25, 1933 David Dawson married Ann Fox. They have three children.
