David Head was born on August 17, 1951 in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. He is the son of Edward Martin Head, a military man, and Eleanor (Elaine Grantham) Farrell, a teacher.

David Head attained Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating from Furman University in 1973. He continued his studies and three years later, in 1976, Head got Master of Arts degree at Florida State University. In 1978, David obtained Doctor of Philosophy degree.
David started his career as an assistant professor of history in 1982 at Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Georgia, a post he held till 1990. Since 1984, Head worked as an assistant professor in charge of studies abroad program at University System of Georgia in London. During a period from 1990 to 1993 David served as an associate professor of history at South Georgia College in Douglas, a position he held until 1993, when Head was appointed to the same post at John Tyler Community College.
David took part in the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference and Carolina’s Symposium on British Studies.
David married Caroline Smith, a teacher, on August 30, 1975. The couple has three children — Elizabeth, Michael and Susan.
