Jonathan Aldrich was born on January 22, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the elder son of Bailey Aldrich, who was a United States federal judge for more than 48 years.

Jonathan was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard College, and the Bread Loaf School of English, where he was a Robert Frost Scholar.
During his life Jonathan Aldrich worked as Principal of a Quaker school in British Columbia; English teacher at Elmira College, New York; Berea College, Kentucky; Portland School of Art, Maine. He served also as assistant director of Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.
Aldrich published his first book, Poems, under pseudonym Paul Teddy in 1959. Over time he published about 10 books with his poetry. His book-length poetic sequence Wade's Wait was the first single-author chapbook published by the Beloit Poetry Journal. It appeared as Chapbook 18 in Fall 1985.
Aldrich was also contributor to literary journals, including West Coast Poetry Review, Chicago Review, Southern Poetry Review, and Beloit Poetry Journal.

Aldrich is married to poet Nancy Aldrich. They have two children, Tom and Tess. Tom Aldrich is a composer.
