Diana Ross was born on July 8, 1910, in Valletta, Malta. Robbie Ross, a Canadian journalist, art critic and art dealer, best known for his relationship with Oscar Wilde, was Diana's relative.
Initially, Diana attended schools in Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, Paris and then studied at Kensington High School in London. In 1932, she got a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with honours from Girton College, Cambridge. Between 1933 and 1935, Diana studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London.
In her early years, Diana worked at the Grenfell Mission orphanage in St. Anthony, Newfoundland. In the 1930's, she held a post of a junior school general teacher and that of an art instructor. Approximately at that time, Ross also worked with Wilfred Grenfell, a medical missionary, and helped research his history, "The Romance of Labrador", drawing illustrations for the book at the same time.
Being an author of thirty books, Ross illustrated four of them by herself and used the pseudonym Gri, the name of her cat, on those occasions. Her written works might be classified as either nursery rhymes or of the fantasy genre. Her first book, "The World at Work", was published in 1939. Her second work was her "Story of the Beetle Who Lived Alone", published in 1941.
Also, Diana wrote a number of books about a little red engine, which began as bedtime stories for her nephew. Some of these include "Little Red Engine and the Rocket", "The Little Red Engine Goes Carolling", among others. Her last book, "I Love My Love with an A: Where Is He?", appeared in 1972.
In addition, Ross wrote short stories for BBC radio broadcasts for children, as well as several volumes of modern fairy tales for older children. It's also worth mentioning, that she took part in the creation of the BBC children's television series "Camberwick Green".
