When My Time Comes: Conversations About Whether Those Who Are Dying Should Have the Right to Determine When Life Should End
(When My Time Comes is a response to many misconceptions a...)
When My Time Comes is a response to many misconceptions and misrepresentations of end-of-life care; it is a call to action - and to conscience - and it is an attempt to heal and soothe our hearts, reminding us that death, too, is an integral part of life.
Diane Rehm is an American public radio talk show host. Her program, The Diane Rehm Show, is distributed nationally and internationally by National Public Radio. Rehm is a director emerita of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation and a trustee emerita of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.
Background
Diane Aed Rehm was born on September 21, 1936, in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. She is the daughter of Turkish immigrant grocery store owners, Wadie and Eugenie (Zoukie) Aed, who raised their daughter in a strictly Syrian Orthodox home.
Education
Rehm attended William B. Powell Elementary and Roosevelt High School in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
Diane Rehm began her radio career in 1973 as a volunteer for WAMU 88.5, the NPR member station in Washington, D.C. She was hired as an assistant producer and later became the host and producer of two health-oriented programs. In 1979, she began hosting WAMU's local morning talk show, Kaleidoscope, which was renamed The Diane Rehm Show in 1984. The Diane Rehm Show grew from a local program to one with international reach and a weekly on-air audience of more than 2.8 million.
In 1998, Rehm's career nearly ended because of spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological voice disorder that causes strained, difficult speech. Rehm sought treatment, returned to the show, and called attention to the condition. The National Council on Communicative Disorders recognized her work with a Communication Award, and ABC’s Nightline devoted an entire program to a conversation with Rehm about her disorder.
Rehm is the author of four best-selling autobiographical books: Finding My Voice (Knopf, 1999), in which she describes her childhood, marriage, career and voice disorder; Toward Commitment: A Dialogue about Marriage (Knopf, 2002), a deeply personal book co-authored with her husband, John; Life with Maxie (Gibbs Smith, 2010), a lighthearted story about her dog; and her most recent book, On My Own (Knopf, 2016), a moving story about the death of her husband of over 54 years and her struggle to reconstruct her life without him. She is also the author of the Die Liebe stirbt nie: Der lange Abschied von meinem Mann (2017), and When My Time Comes: Conversations About Whether Those Who Are Dying Should Have the Right to Determine When Life Should End (2020).
Rehm has interviewed an array of notables, including Al Gore, former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, novelist John Grisham, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann, actress Lauren Bacall, and many others. Rehm’s National Public Radio show claimed over 700,000 listeners nationwide by 2001; her show was also available abroad on Armed Forces Radio. Rehm’s loyal connection to WAMU 88.5 and American University was recognized in 2007 when she was invited to receive an honorary degree and deliver the College of Arts and Sciences commencement speech. She has also been awarded honorary degrees from Virginia Theological Seminary, Washington College, McDaniel College, and Shepherd University.
In 2010, Diane Rehm won a Personal Peabody Award, considered among the most prestigious and selective prizes in electronic media, for her more than 30 years in public broadcasting. Rehm has been also named "Washingtonian of the Year," and one of the "150 Most Influential People in Washington" by Washingtonian magazine. In 2011, she received the Excellence in Journalism Award from the American News Women's Club. In 2011, Rehm was awarded the Voice Education Research Awareness (VERA) Award from The Voice Foundation for her sustained contributions to the field of voice communication. She's been included several times on the magazine’s list of the "100 Most Powerful Women," most recently in 2013. Newsweek magazine named The Diane Rehm Show one of the most interesting talk shows in the country. In fall 2013, the program was identified as one of the most powerful programs in public radio based on its ability to draw listeners to public radio stations. Rehm was selected as Arab American of the Year by ACCESS in 2013 in celebration of her rich heritage. In 2014, President Barack Obama presented Rehm with the National Humanities Medal.
Rehm has received many other honors and awards in her three-decade career, including the inaugural Urbino (Italy) Press Award; the International Matrix Award from the Association for Women in Communications; and named a Fellow by the Society of Professional Journalists, the highest honor the society bestows on a journalist, for extraordinary contributions to the profession.

Membership
Rehm is a member of board of the PEN Faulkner Award Foundation and Western Maryland College. She is also a member of board of the "International Women" Media Foundation and Society of Professional Journalists.
Personality
Rehrn's difficult childhood served as the motivation and basis for her personal memoir. Even in her books, she describes her childhood, which was irrevocably marked by her mother's failing mental health and during which Rehm suffered both physical and emotional abuse. There were weeks when her mother would not speak to her and times when she sustained a great deal of physical punishment. Rehm was left with feelings of insecurity, guilt, and low self-esteem - feelings that remained as she grew to adulthood. Her life at school was a different story: teachers considered her bright, thus creating a confusing dual environment.
Rehm's interviewing style is low key and she allows guests to speak for themselves, sometimes with startling consequences. Regardless of the varying opinions of her work, many Washingtonians pay attention.
In 1998, she was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a rare neurological disorder that creates strangled hoarseness and fills her voice with tremors. The condition caused Rehm to actually lose her voice, keeping her off the air for a time. Although eventually regaining her voice, she continues to undergo periodic treatment with botulinum toxin to control the symptoms and has written several articles and produced a program on the disorder.
