In 1949 Dmitry Lvov entered the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after I. M. Sechenov, in 1951 transferred to the Military Medical Academy named after S. M. Kirov in Leningrad, which he graduated in 1955. He specialized in the Department of General Biology and Parasitology under the guidance of Academician.
After graduating from the Academy, D. Lvov served in the Soviet Army as a junior researcher at the Institute of the Ministry of Defense. In 1957-1960 he worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine of the USSR Ministry of Health. He conducted expeditionary laboratory work in the areas of tick-borne encephalitis. In 1960 he defended his thesis on "Immunological structure of the population in the foci of tick-borne encephalitis". From 1961 to 1967 D. Lvov worked consistently at the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitis of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences as a junior, senior researcher, the head of the laboratory under the guidance of Academician of Academy of Medical Sciences M. P. Chumakov. In 1965 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Immunoprophylaxis of tick-borne encephalitis". He conducted mathematical modeling of the epidural process in the foci of arboviruses.
From 1968 to nowadays D. Lvov works at the Institute of Virology named after D. I. Ivanovsky consistently as head of the Laboratory of Genetics of Arboviruses (1968), Head of the Laboratory of Ecology and the Department of Ecology of Viruses, from 1969 to nowadays, Deputy Director of the Institute for Scientific Work, 1969-1987, Director of the Institute, from 1988 to nowadays. From 1984 to nowadays D. Lvov is the Head of the All-Union (now All-Russian) Center for the Ecology of Infectious Disease Pathogens; since 1987 to nowadays he works as the Director of the World Health Organization Centers for Influenza and Respiratory Infections, Viral Hepatitis, Arboviruses.
Dmitry is an expert of World Health Orgaization (from 1999 to nowadays), chairman of the Committee on Health and Medical Sciences of the International Pacific Scientific Association (1974-1982), an international adviser to the American Committee on Arboviruses (from 1976 to the nowadays), a member of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses (from 1985 to nowadays).
D. K. Lvov is the author and co-author of more than 500 scientific works, including 8 monographs. The most important of them are: "Ecology of arboviruses" (1974), "Population genetics of vertebrate viruses" (1977), "Bird migration and transfer of infectious agents" (1979), "Ecology of causative agents of infectious diseases" (1984), "Arboviruses and arbovirus infections" (1989), "New and emerging virus infections. Questions of virology" (2000), "The Atlas of the spread of pathogens of natural focal viral infections in the territory of the Russian Federation" (2001), "Circulation of influenza virus in natural biocenosis" (1978), "Conceptis of Virology" (1993), "Arboviral Zoonoses in Northern Eurasia" (1994), "Viral Hepatitis" (1994), "Prevalence of hepatitis C virus and distribution of its genotypes in Northern Eurasia" (1996).
He is a Full member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (now Russian Academy of Medical Sciences), 1984.
Dmitry is married to Lvova Svetlana Grigorievna and has two sons.
