Donald Earl was born on February 11, 1931, in Cambridge, England.
Earl was educated in Latin and Roman history at St. Catharine’s College at Cambridge University in England.
Throughout his academic career, Earl lectured at Leeds University in England, Northwestern University in Illinois and was chair of the Classics Department at the University of Hull in England. He held the latter post until 1988, when the University disbanded the department. Earl stuck with the discipline, however, and became Dean of Arts at Hull in 1984. After retiring in 1988, he taught Roman history at Hull part-time.
Donald's books The Political Thought of Sal-lust (1961), concerned mainly with the historian's concept of virtus; a less persuasive study, Tiberius Gracchus (1963); The Moral and Political Tradition of Rome (1967); and The Age of Augustus (1968), the book of his most used by students and commercially the most successful, being translated into French and German and reprinted in order to be remaindered.

1984Donald brought a combination of a sense of fun and of deep historical perspective to everything in which he involved himself. Behind a cloud of pipe smoke, his was the liveliest corner at any social event. He was the opposite of politically correct but was sufficiently witty to get away with it.
Donald was married and had two sons and three daughters.
