James Jackson was born on September 23, 1936, in Leeds, United Kingdom. He was the son of Archie and Winifred Mary (Kay) Jackson.
Jackson obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Sheffield in 1957. He then received his master's degree from the University of Leicester in 1959 and his doctorate from the University of Malaya in 1965.
Jackson started his career as a lecturer in geography at the University of Malaya in 1961. He worked there for 5 years and then returned to England, where he became a senior lecturer of Southeast Asian geography at the University of Hull beginning in 1973.
During his last year of life, Jackson worked and lived in Australia. He held the position of professor of geography at the School of Modern Asian Studies at Griffith University in Brisbane.
Jackson was a member of the Institute of British Geographers.
Jackson was married to Wong Suk-Han since January 31, 1964. The marriage produced 3 children: Karen, Victoria Louise and Andrew.
