Every election provides additional evidence of the continuity of families in American politics. Donn M. Kurtz compiled this collection of articles while conducting research on political families, also hoping to synthesize the body of literature on this subject. The book considers political families as a national, rather than a regional, phenomenon, looking at situations such as children with greater political efficacy and involvement in politics at a younger age. The selections are of an interdisciplinary nature and draw upon several outlets: history, sociology, political science, genealogy, and economics.

Investigating suggestions that about three-fourths of public officials in egalitarian and classless America come from fewer than ten percent of the country's families, political scientist Kurtz analyzes the families and backgrounds of 104 members of the US Supreme court from 1789 to 1988, and 98 justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1812 to 1988. In both cases a majority were members of families whose political activity extended over three or more generations and across state boundaries.

In 1969 Donn M. Kurtz was a faculty member of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and served as a department head from 1974 to 1981. From 1972 to 1973 and from 1986 to 1987 Kurtz was a president of the Louisiana Political Science Association. In 1987 he was a fellow at the African Institute of the Duquesne University. In 1989 he was appointed a Crocker professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 1995 Kurtz was an associate editor of the Southeastern Political Review.
