MAMEDKULIZADE, Dzhalil was born on February 22, 1866 in Nakhichevan’.
1887 graduate Gori Teachers’ Training Seminary.
1888-1898 taught in rural schools. From 1903 in Tiflis on ed staff of Azer newspaper “Russian East”. 1906-1931 founded and (with brief intervals) published satirical journal “Molla Nasreddin” in Tiflis.
1920, after fall of independent Azer Republic, emigrated to Iran. 1921 returned to Soviet Azer at invitation of Soviet government. Continued his work to introduce new Latinized alphabet to replace Arabic alphabet.
Edited first Azer newspaper in new orthography “New Path”. Late 19th Century first work published. Headed democratic trend in Azer lit, carring on realist traditions of Akhundov.
Attacked religious fanaticism, general backwardness and ignorance in his works and in satirical journal “Molla Nasreddin”. Passionately defended ideas of soc justice and equality of women. Introduced new hero into Azer lit, peasant who is fanatically religious, but kind and chivalrous.
His works are popular in all Moslem countries.
