Eckart studied at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. In 1973 he became a Doctor of Theologie. In two year he received a degree of the Doctor of Habilitation in Theologie.
Eckart was a professor of Old Testament and Biblical archaeology at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany from 1979 to 1985. In this year he became a professor of Osnabrück University in Osnabrück, Germany. He worked there for five years. From 1990 to 1996 he worked as a professor at Mainz University in Mainz, Germany. He worked there until 1996.
Since 1996 Eckart worked as a professor at the Theology University of Munich in Munich, Germany. Since 2002 he was the Honorary professor at the University of Pretoria in Pretoria, South Africa.
Eckart married to Gesa Kröger on October 11, 1973.
