Educated at Moshupa, then in South Africa first at the Tiger Kloof Institution then from 1948 to 1949 the Teachers’ Training College at Vriburg.
He returned to teach at Moshupa Primary School in 1950, rising to be the head teacher from 1957 to 1964 when he gave up teaching for politics. He was elected to the Assembly for Moshupa at the elections in March 1965. The following year he went on a political study tour to Britain and West Germany. After his return, he was appointed Assistant Minister of Labour and Social Services. He was moved to Assistant Minister of Education, Health and Labour and after being returned unopposed at the October 1969 election he was promoted Minister of State with special responsibility for foreign affairs, information and the civil service. He travelled to the Soviet Union in 1969 and to America in 1970. He became Minister of Agriculture after the big cabinet reshuffle in April 1972.
In 1999 he decided to withdraw from politics.
Earnest, intelligent politician who turned from teaching to Parliament when he was 44. A man of broad interests, he has handled a variety of portfolios and has travelled to many countries, including Britain, USA and the Soviet Union. An even-tempered person with a trim moustache, he takes his duties seriously but does not seem a man of burning ambition.
