Covensky was born on April 14, 1945 in Bucharest, Romania; the daughter of Moshe Friedrich Michaeli and Gizy Heinish Michaeli Bizaoui. She grew up in Haifa. In 1965, Edith arrived in the United States and naturalized as a US citizen.

Covensky was born on April 14, 1945 in Bucharest, Romania; the daughter of Moshe Friedrich Michaeli and Gizy Heinish Michaeli Bizaoui. She grew up in Haifa. In 1965, Edith arrived in the United States and naturalized as a US citizen.
Covensky received a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of Hebrew Studies in 1968. Three years later she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree Wayne State University. In 1975, Edith was given a Master of Arts degree from that university. Also in 1980, she was given a Ph.D. from Wayne State University.
Covensky was a sergeant of communications corps in Israeli Army from 1963 to 1965. In 1968, she began her career as a teacher at Congregation Shaarey Zedek and had held the position for seven years. Then in 1987, she became an instructor of hebrew at Wayne State University. Also Edith served as a lecturer at the same university from 1998 to 2012. Since 2012 she has been a senior lecturer at Wayne State University, where she teaches Hebrew and Israeli culture.
In addition, she is editor of Pseifas, an Israeli literary Journal dedicated to classical and Hebrew poetry. Covensky edits an annual edition of Hebrew poets, and writers on Hebrew poetry in English speaking countries.
Covensky serves on the committee of the Annual Jewish Film Festival of Metro Detroit with a branch in West Bloomfield. She is a distinguished member of the International Society of Poets.
On June 26, 1969 Edith Covensky married Harvey Covensky. They have two children.
