Mayeda received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1957. A year later he earned his Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1961 from the University of Utah.
Mayeda was a sergeant at the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He began his career as an assistant professor of biology at Wayne State University in 1961. Five years later he took a position of an associate professor at the same university. Since 1972 Kazutoshi worked as a professor at Wayne State University.
Also he was a research associate at National Institute of Genetics in Japan from 1970 to 1971. In 1976, Mayeda served as a genetic counselor at Mott Center of the Wayne State University School of Medicine and held it for eleven years. In addition, he was a genetics consultant at Children's Hospital of Michigan.
Mayeda was a president of Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) in Detroit, vice-president of National JACL in San Francisco from 1980 to 1982.
Kazutoshi Mayeda married Betty Waki in 1949. They have 2 daughters and a son. He has four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
