Ruddiman was born on December 27, 1864 in Dearborn, Michigan, United States; the son of William and Catherine (Noble) Ruddiman.
Ruddiman graduated from Detroit High School in 1884. Three years later he received a Master of Pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan. In 1893, Edsel earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Vanderbilt University.
Ruddiman began his career as a chemist in charge manufacturing laboratory of Milburn & Williamson in 1887 and held it for three years. In 1897, he took a position of a chemist at the same laboratory, where he worked until 1920. A year later he became a chief chemist at John T. Milliken & Company. Then in 1926, Ruddiman held the position of a research chemist at Ford Motor Company, where he served until 1942.
Also Edsel served as a food and drug inspection chemist at Milburn & Williamson in 1907-1914. In 1890, he was appointed a professor of pharmacy and materia medica of the department of pharmacy at Vanderbilt University and held it until 1920. Ruddiman worked as a dean at School of Pharmacy of Vanderbilt University between 1919-1920.

2009On July 29, 1889 Edsel Ruddiman married Jennie Evelyn (Perry) Ruddiman. They had a son.
