Tamariz received a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree from National University of Mexico (nowadays National Autonomous University of Mexico) in 1975. Eight years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.
Tamariz began Joaquin's career as a chemistry lecturer at National University of Mexico (nowadays National Autonomous University of Mexico) in 1972 and held it for four years. In 1977, Joaquin became a researcher at the University of Grenoble in France. Five years later Joaquin was appointed an assistant professor of Organic Chemistry Department at National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico and held the position until 1987. Since 1988 he has been a professor of Organic Chemistry Department at the same institute.
Tamariz is a member of Mexican Chemical Society, Mexican Academy of Sciences and American Chemical Society.
On April 23, 1984, Joaquin Tamariz married Iris Kaufman. They have 2 children.
