Background
Edward Waldo Emerson he fourth and youngest child of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his second wife, Lydia Jackson, was born, lived, and died in Concord, Mass. In boyhood he accompanied Henry Thoreau on many an excursion and learned to observe nature with something of his friend’s exactness, though never with his passionate absorption. Frail health and an undersized body prevented him from enlisting in the Union army.
