Edward Mayes was the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi from 1887 to 1891.

Mayes, Edward was born on December 15, 1846 in in Hinds Company, Mississippi, United States. Son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Rigg) Mayes.

Education

Private 4th Mississippi Cavalry, C.S.A., 1864-1865. Bachelor of Arts, University of Mississippi, 1868, Bachelor of Laws, 1869. (Doctor of Laws, Mississippi College, 1890).

Career

He graduated from University of Mississippi in 1868. He worked as a lawyer in Coffeeville and Oxford. In 1877, he taught law at University of Mississippi.

He served as its Chancellor from 1887 to 1891. He then taught law at Millsaps College. He died in Jackson, Mississippi, aged 71.
