(The conquest of Tahiti in 1847 is representation of the s...)
The conquest of Tahiti in 1847 is representation of the surge of colonialism that swept worldwide as European countries gobbled up the lands and their native peoples in the Americas, India, Southeast Asia, north and south Africa, Australia, and Oceania. The Tahitian islands are a particularly interesting case in point because so many aspects of white colonial rapacity are involved. Along with the apparent blessings of iron tools, explorers imported the curses of venereal and epidemic diseases. Missionaries with their one 'True God,' obliterated the many traditional gods. French and English naval frigates brought their own wars. Trades and whalers exploited natural resources. Soldiers and settlers seized strategic bases and, the most precious commodity of all, ancestral lands. Heretofore, the desperate and heroic fight for the homeland by the Tahitian has had only brief, condescending notice in French historical accounts. This book for the first time in the English language gives due respect and compassion to the prides and glories of the ancient indigenous peoples on the islands, while rejoicing in their idyllic South Sea setting.
