Berger received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from Hunter College in 1965. Two years later he earned his Master of Arts degree in Zoology from Syracuse University. In 1969, Edward was given a Ph.D. from the same university.
Berger began his career as a teaching assistant at Syracuse University in 1965 and held the position for three years. In 1971, he became an assistant professor at State University of New York. Then in 1974, Edward was appointed an assistant professor at Dartmouth College. Also he served as an associate professor at that college from 1977 to 1984.
In 1980, Berger became a visiting associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked until 1981. Also in 1982, he held a position of an associate at Verax Corporation, where he served until 1998. In 1990, he was appointed Albert Bradley Third Century Professor of Science, at Dartmouth College and held the position for five years. In addition, Edward worked as a dean of graduate studies at the same college from 1994 to 1997. Then in 1997, he became a dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth College and held it until 2001. Berger was a chairman of Biology Department at that college in 1988-1989, 1991-1994 and 2003-2006. From 1984 he worked as a professor of biological sciences at Dartmouth College. Nowadays he is a professor emeritus at the same college.
Berger is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, Genetics Society of America, Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa, American Society of Cell Biologists, Human Genome Organization.
On December 18, 1967 Edward Berger married Deirdre Wallace, with whom he divorced in November 1981. They have four children. On December 6, 1981 he married Barbara Fritsche.
