Engaged for a number of 114 years in engineering works at Nottingham as draughtsman and in other positions. Joined the staff of the physical department of University College, Nottingham, 1893. Senior lecturer and demonstrator, 1895.

Professor of Experimental Physics, University College, Nottingham, since 1905. F. Royal Society of Edinburgh, F.Ph.S.L.
