Background

Zimbalist, Efrem was born on April 9, 1889 in Rostow on Don, Russia. Son of Aaron and Maria Zimbalist.

Education

Early mus. training under father. Studied in Imperial School, St. Petersburg, Russia, with Leopold Auer.

Career

. Debut in Berlin at 17. Toured through Germany and England. Came to the United States, 1911, and has appeared in all the leading cities.

Has made two world tours, also six tours of the Orient. Composer of (works for orchestra) American Rhapsody, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Landara (an opera; concerts for piano and orchestra).

Also string quartet; violin sonata and many songs and minor pieces for violin and piano. Director Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, 1941-1968. Home: Reno, Nev.
