Berger received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California in 1944. Eleven years later she earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from Pennsylvania State University.
Berger began her career as a pre-doctoral intern at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute of the University of California in 1947 and had held it for a year. In 1956, she took the position of a postdoctoral intern at Judge Baker Child Center. Then in 1957, Ellen was appointed a staff psychologist at the same center, where she worked until 1993. Since 1969 she worked as an instructor at Medical School of Harvard University. Since 1993 Berger held the position of a consultant at Judge Baker Child Center.
Berger was a member of Massachusetts Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, New York Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi.
On June 20, 1951 Ellen Berger married Jack Robert Tessman, with whom she divorced in 1961. On December 8, 1967 she married Arthur Victor Berger.
