Elmo Krøjer Jensen is a Swedish physician, geriatrician, and medical researcher. A Danish-born doctor, he has been affiliated with the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden, where he served as consultant in geriatric medicine and became associate professor of geriatrics. His research has focused on aging, gerontology, mental health in older adults, pharmacotherapy, and age-related medical conditions.
Education
Jensen earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Odense, Denmark, in 1977. He later received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Lund University, Sweden, in 1988.
Career
Jensen began his medical career as an assistant physician at the Middelfart Psychiatric Clinic in Denmark in 1975 and served as an assistant physician at the Hospital of Skælskør in 1976. After earning his medical degree in 1977, he moved to Sweden, where he completed residency training at County Hospital Jönköping from 1977 to 1981 and at the University Hospital in Lund from 1981 to 1982.
From 1983 to 1984, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry at the University Hospital in Lund. He subsequently joined the hospital's geriatric clinic, serving as consultant from 1984 to 1994. In 1989, he was associated with the Institute of Social Medicine at Lund University Hospital and worked with the Medical Rehabilitation Clinic in Orup, Sweden, from 1990 to 1991.
In 1995, Jensen became consultant in the Department of Medicine, Geriatric Section, at the University Hospital in Lund. He was appointed associate professor of geriatrics in 1998.
Alongside his clinical work, Jensen conducted research in both metabolic medicine and geriatrics. His early studies examined lipid metabolism, liver function, hepatocyte physiology, lipoprotein uptake, and related metabolic processes. During the 1990s and 2000s, his research increasingly focused on gerontology, including aging, quality of life, mental health, medication use among older adults, sleep disorders, cognitive function, and biomarkers associated with aging.
Among Jensen's published research are studies on depressive symptoms in elderly populations, insomnia and quality of life among 80-year-olds, long-term medication use in aging populations, homocysteine and methylmalonic acid as markers of health and cognitive function in older adults, psychogeriatric assessment methods, and the medical and social aspects of drug treatment in the elderly. His scientific publications appeared in journals including Nordic Journal of Psychiatry, Journal of Sleep Research, Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Journal of Internal Medicine, International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Clinical Endocrinology, and Aging Clinical and Experimental Research.
