Emily VanCamp is a Canadian actress known for her lead roles in numerous television series and also for her powerful performance in films. She is popular on both Canadian as well as American television. Initially, she bagged a few commercials and was soon cast in the Canadian children's horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark? She got her first big break at the age of 15 when she was cast in Glory Days.
Background
Emily Irene VanCamp was born on May 12, 1986, in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada, to Cindy and Robert VanCamp, who is an animal nutritionist. She has three sisters, Alison VanCamp, Molly VanCamp, and Katie VanCamp, a former dancer who later became a children's book writer. As a child, Emily worked for her father, delivering food materials to clients in and around her town.
Growing up, she was third in the family of four girls, so it can be said she was a hyper middle child. At the ripe young age of three, Emily started dancing all around her house. When she got older, she told her mother she wanted to move away from home to pursue it further. Her mother was hesitant but supported her daughter nonetheless.
Education
VanCamp started studying dance at the age of three, wanting to become a professional dancer. At the age of 11, she convinced her parents to let her attend a summer training program in Montreal. At 12, Emily applied to L’Ecole Superieure de Danse de Quebec, and when she was accepted, she moved there to study ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and tap. She moved to Montréal and stayed with a local French Canadian family. She is fluent in French.
When her older sister Katie, also a dancer, was cast as a ballerina in the movie Ladies Room, Emily became interested in acting while visiting her on the set. Emily was passionate about acting from the moment she saw her sister on the set of that movie. She was then just 12. After she hired an agent, she starred in two commercials. She landed her first acting job in the children’s horror TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark? when she was 13. She appeared in just one scene with Elisha Cuthbert. By then, she was trying to balance her dancing and acting career at the same time and finally decided to focus her attention solely on acting since she loved it more.
Emily went on to portray Jacqueline Kennedy at the age of 13 in the Emmy-nominated CBS-TV movie Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. She also appeared as Becky Sue Drummond in the episode‘Bully for You of the series Radio Active, aired on Canadian television YTV.
The following year, she starred in an independent film named Lost & Delirious, the Canadian lesbian-themed drama, which got rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival that year. Emily played Jessica Paré’s sister.
2002 was the year her television career started. She landed a role as one of the main characters in Kevin Williamson’s new show, Glory Days. After a few months, it stopped production and was taken off the air.
During that time, Emily appeared in a few film projects - A Different Loyalty and The Ring Two. In 2002, she appeared in No Good Deed opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Milla Jovovich.
Her role in the Warner Bros. series Everwood was Emily’s big break - she received four Teen Choice Awards nominations and one Young Artist Award nominations. Created by Greg Berlanti, the series was aired on The WB and spanned over four seasons. Everwood made Emily a rising star.
After Everwood ended, Emily sold her house in Park City, Utah and moved to Los Angeles. It didn’t take long for her to receive a new project. She landed a guest-starring role in the popular crime drama, Law & Order: SVU, playing a girl named Charlotte who gets herself tangled in a web of lies and deceit while being the main suspect to her mother’s murder.
Everwood creator Greg Berlanti cast her in the ABC show Brothers & Sisters. It aired on ABC for five seasons. She played the main role of Rebecca Harper for four seasons and appeared in a guest role in a few episodes of the fifth season. While on hiatus, Emily starred in the independent film Norman, which earned her awards from the San Diego Film Festival and the Breckenridge Film Festival. In the same year, she appeared in the TV miniseries Ben Hur, aired first on Canada's CBC network, and then on ABC in the United States. Steve Shill directed the series, which was based on Lew Wallace's novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
In 2011, she appeared in the film Beyond the Blackboard by Hallmark Hall of Fame. She played the role of Stacey Bess, a teacher, in the film which was based on Stacey Bess’ memoir, Nobody Don't Love Nobody. The film was aired on CBS on April 24, 2011. In the same year, she snagged the main role of Emily Thorne / Amanda Clarke in the TV series Revenge, which was aired on ABC till 2015.
In 2014, she starred as Sharon Carter in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, a film by the Marvel Cinematic Universe which was released in 2011. Produced by Marvel Studios, this superhero film was based on the Marvel Comics character Captain America. In 2016, she reprised her role in the sequel Captain America: Civil War.
She was featured in the 2015 independent film The Girl in the Book, which was based on a true story. She played Alice, an assistant book editor, and writer. The producers of the film raised over $65,000 through crowdfunding.
In 2016, she appeared in the French-Canadian independent film Boundaries, directed by Chloé Robichaud. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also starred Danielle Richard and Félixe Nasser-Villeray. The film was released in French as well.
In 2018, she began playing nurse practitioner Nicolette 'Nic’ Nevin, the female lead, in the medical drama series The Resident. The series started off with a 14-episode season, which was extended into a second season in May 2018. The show has been nominated for Teen Choice Awards in the category Choice Breakout TV Show.

Politics
VanCamp is a liberal. She really likes Obama and, despite her Canadian citizenship, VanCamp stumped for Obama in 2008, campaigning as a Canadian who wants her neighbors to the south to enjoy the same healthcare benefits that she does: "Where I come from, we have universal health care. I want my neighbors in America to be able to afford to go to doctors when they’re sick."
Her enthusiasm for Obama carried over to 2012 and, about a month before the elections, she tweeted: "Obama 2012! This Canadian girl is all about him. grateful for his integrity."
Views
VanCamp identifies herself as a feminist. She is a supporter of gay marriage legalization. She said: "Bottom line about gay marriage is that it shouldn’t even be a debate. Everyone should have the right to marry the person they love."
VanCamp attended the 2012 Environmental Media Awards, signaling her support of environmental causes.
Quotations:
"It should be illegal for people to stalk you with cameras. It's really invasive. How do you enjoy a moment? I see how people spiral out of control."
"I wouldn't have labeled myself a girl-next-door. I just think I had the look to play those characters. I was a good kid, but I definitely had my moments of rebellion."
Personality
VanCamp speaks French fluently and says she “feels at home” when she hears the language. She enjoys being able to speak in another language since it helps her promote her work in other parts of the world. She studied Spanish and is an accomplished dancer, having studied ballet, jazz, hip-hop and tap as a child, which she credits with helping her through her fight scenes on Revenge.
She enjoys cooking. VanCamp is fond of preparing home-cooked meals for her family and friends. In fact, she would even consider having a career that's related to cooking. VanCamp said that she would've chosen a job that's related to either dancing or cooking if she had not become a professional actress.
