(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up s...)
Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up science and religion in the same book Then God himself is unsci entific, for he has so largely and legibly written himself into that Book of Nature that contains all the sciences that even the heathen are without excuse for not reading his eternal power and god head in the things that are made. Is it scientific to attack religion from the side of science, and unscientific to defend it from the same side? Is it sc1entific to illustrate one science by another, as is daily done without rebuke, and unscientific to illustrate that supreme science which we call relrgron by that other science which we call as tronomy? Is it scientific to notice the gigantic tracks of birds in the rocks of the Connecticut valley, and unscientific to notice in both earthly and heavenly strata the still more gigantic foot prints of the Creator? Was it scientific and in excellent taste for the scholar who in the year I 500 found an aged parchment in the monastery of Corwey, in Westphalia, to cry out so that all Europe heard him, This reads like Tacitus, and unscientific as well as in bad taste for the scholar who finds still more ancient inscriptions. Enoch Fitch Burr was the son of Zalmon and Mary (Hanford) Burr, and descended from Jonathan Edwards, was born on October 21, 1818 at Greens Farms, near Westport, Connecticut.
Enoch Burr prepared for college at the local academy and at Wilton, Connecticut, under Dr. Hawley Olmstead, entering the same class at Yale with Zalmon B. , his older brother. He graduated with the distinction of "class orator" in 1839 and continued for a year in the Divinity School, then led by Nathaniel W. Taylor. Two further years were spent at the college in scientific study, but failing health kept him for the next three at home.
On his mother's death he returned to New Haven and devoted nearly four years to higher mathematics and physical astronomy, his studies resulting in an application of calculus to the theory of Neptune entitled Results of Analytical Researches in the Neptunian Theory of Uranus (1848). Renewed religious interest interrupted the scientific career thus auspiciously begun. Burr had been licensed to preach in 1842.
On October 3, 1850, Enoch Burr was ordained pastor of the village church of Hamburg, Connecticut, part of the ancient town of Lyme. Save for a year of travel abroad in 1855, accompanied by his wife and brother Zalmon, Hamburg remained Burr's home for life. But his energies sought wider outlet. A theological essay, Christ the Revealer of God (1854), was followed (1857 - 62) by a series of tracts and sermons, and finally, after an interval of five years, by a volume destined to give him wider reputation.
Ecce Coelum, or Parish Astronomy (1867) met so well the popular demand for science in the service of apologetics as to pass through sixteen or more editions. It also led to his appointment at Amherst from 1868 to 1874 as lecturer on The Scientific Evidences of Religion, with further invitations to lecture in New York and Boston, and at Yale and Williams.
Literary pursuits so absorbing could scarcely fail to remove the spare, austere, and often quixotic minister from his farmer parishioners. Among his conservative ministerial associates Dr. Burr loomed up as the scientific champion of the ancient faith.
Nevertheless, when, after fifty-six years of service, the aged pastor resigned his charge the church declined to accept his resignation, continuing him as pastor until his death.
Burr died at his home in Lyme at the age of 89, survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
Outside of his parish Enoch Burr was widely known through his scientific lectures and his numerous volumes. Two volumes, Pater Mundi (1870) and The Doctrine of Evolution (1873), contain his lectures, and show, together with two successors of similar type, Celestial Empires (1885) and Universal Beliefs (1887), the reaction of New England orthodoxy to the inroads of science. Three later volumes of sermons, Ad Fidem (1871), Toward the Strait Gate (1875), In the Vineyard (1876); a book of verse, Thy Voyage (1875); and two biblico-historical novels, Dio, the Athenian (1880) and Aleph the Chaldean (1891) may be mentioned.

In his religious affiliation Burr was a Congregationalist.
Among his conservative ministerial associates Dr. Burr loomed up as the scientific champion of the ancient faith.
To his flock also he seemed a great man, but increasingly removed from common life.
In 1851 Enoch Burr married Harriet A. , daughter of Peter Lord of Lyme.
