1898-1917, Professor of Logic, Ethics, Psychology and Sociology, University of Havana: Secretary of Education in the Cabinet of General Leonard Wood, and reorganized the University of Havana. Elected Vice President of Cuba and held that post under General Mario Garcia Mendocal, 1913-1917.
Despite his active political career Varona was one of the most prolific Latin American philosophers of the twentieth century, leaving nearly 2,000 published works at the time of his death. He is considered one of the most important positivist thinkers in Latin America.
