Toch, Ernst was born on December 7, 1887 in Vienna, Austria. Son of Moritz and Gisela (Graf) Toch.

Education

Student of University of Vienna, 1906-1909. Doctor of Philisophy, University of Heidelberg, 1921. Doctor honoris causa, Hebrew College of Cincinnati, 1963.

Career

Came to the United States, 1934, naturalized, 1940. Self-taught as a composer. While still in high school his works were performed by foremost European groups, both chamber and orchestral music.

Member National Institute Arts and Letters, Grand Cross of Merit Order Government West German Republic, 1957.
