Came to the United States, 1934, naturalized, 1940. Self-taught as a composer. While still in high school his works were performed by foremost European groups, both chamber and orchestral music.
Served as Lieutenant in infantry, Austrian Army (Italy, Russia, Poland), 1914-1918. Public works include operas, cantatas, symphonies, concertos, major symphonic works, string quartets, string trios, string duos, piano quintet, sonatas for various instruments, piano pieces, lieder, choruses, music for plays, moving pictures, radio. Member National Institute Arts and Letters, Grand Cross of Merit Order Government West German Republic, 1957.
