Farkas was born on September 13, 1948 in Erdobenye, Hungary; the daughter of András Farkas and Margit Bakó.
Farkas received a Master of Science degree in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1975 from Lajos Kossuth University (nowadays University of Debrecen). Also in 1998, she was given a Doctor of Science degree from Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Farkas began her career as a lecturer at Lajos Kossuth University (nowadays University of Debrecen) in 1972. Eight years later she was appointed an assistant professor and an associate professor in 1989 at the same university. Since 1999 Etelka has been a professor at the University of Debrecen.

On October 25, 1980 Etelka Farkas married János Végsö. They have 2 children.
