Lengfeld was born on February 18, 1863 in San Francisco, California, United States; the son of Louis and Henrietta (Honisberg) Lengfeld.
Lengfeld studied at San Francisco College of Pharmacy (nowadays UCSF School of Pharmacy), the University of California, Johns Hopkins University and at Zurich, Liege, Munich and Paris.
Lengfeld began his career as a professor of chemistry at South Dakota School of Mines (nowadays South Dakota School of Mines & Technology) in 1890. A year later he took a position of an instructor of chemistry at the University of California. Also Felix served as a docent-instructor and assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago from 1892 to 1901.
