Fonda Lee was born on March 10, 1979, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She grew up in Calgary and lived in Toronto and the San Francisco Bay Area before settling in Portland.
Fonda's father introduced science-fiction to her and she was a science fiction and fantasy fan from a young age.
Fonda Lee read tons of books and her mother encouraged her interest. Fonda was that kid who would stay after school in the library and hang out and read until the library closed. She also trained in Shotokan karate for about twelve years as a teenager and in early adulthood.
Fonda wrote her first novel, about a dragon on a quest for a magic pendant, in the fifth grade during the long bus ride to and from school each day. Many years later, she cast her high school classmates as characters in her second novel, a pulpy superhero saga co-written with a friend by passing a graphing calculator back and forth during biology class.
She has a Master of Business Administration degree from Stanford University.
Early in career, Fonda Lee became a management consultant, and then a corporate strategist at Nike. She had a day job going for a long time and writing for fun in her free time. But she soon reached a point when she wasn’t writing anymore because she was too busy and she had no time left for writing. Then she realized she didn’t like what she was doing in her day job, and she resolved to finally start taking writing seriously, decided to cut back on her day job and find a way to include writing in her life.
She took a writing course online and started working on a novel and eventually quit her day job. She worked as a freelance business consultant, which gave her enough flexibility in her schedule to pursue her new goal, which was to become a published author. She wrote a practice novel, then a fantasy novel that wasn't sold, and then Zeroboxer (2015), which became her debut. Since that time she is an author at Scholastic.
In 2017 Lee became an author at Orbit Books and published the first book from the Exo series, Exo, and the first book from The Green Bone Saga, the debut novel for adults, Jade City. Exo was followed by sequel Cross Fire (2018). In 2019 Fonda published the second book from The Green Bone Saga, Jade War. She has also written several short fiction books and is an author at Llewellyn Worldwide.
Fonda Lee won numerous accolades including being named Junior Library Guild Selection, Andre Norton Award finalist, Oregon Book Award finalist, Oregon Spirit Book Award winner, and YALSA Top Ten Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers. Her novel Zeroboxer was nominated for the 2015 Andre Norton Award. Her second novel Exo was nominated for the Andre Norton Award. Her debut novel for adults, Jade City, was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novel and won the World Fantasy Award.

2017Fonda Lee started writing for fun and always imagined it as a hobby. She didn’t know any writers, wasn’t exposed to writers, and although she told her parents she wanted to write books, she didn’t think it could be a real job.
What she dig in her books and others: tight prose, gritty and propulsive action scenes, grounded and detailed worldbuilding, moral ambiguity, conflicting factions in changing societies, difficult family relationships, issues of identity, and creative use of profanity.
Fonda Lee is an experienced martial artist, with black belts in karate and kung fu. She likes watching movies, practicing martial arts, and eating food - especially anything with egg, cheese, red meat, avocado, or similarly high saturated fat content. She fueled by copious amounts of tea.
