(Excerpt from Tom Playfair: Or Making a Start The vicissi...)
Excerpt from Tom Playfair: Or Making a Start The vicissitudes of the "Tom Playfair" manuscript would alone make a story. How it was written over seven years ago, for the sake of a college class, and with no ulterior thought of publication; how portions of it gradually found their way into print; how the writer hesitated for years whether to consign the remaining parts to the book publisher or to the waste-basket; how the cordial reception of "Percy Wynn," and the kind words concerning "Tom Playfair" from critics and from readers inspirited him to take the venerable manuscript - done at all manner of odd times, in lead pencil and ink, upon all sorts and conditions of paper - from his trunk, and subsequently devote no small part of his vacation days (July, August, 1891) to its revisal; how the valued advice and kind words of literary friends served him in the revision - are not all these things indelibly impressed upon the author's memory? And now he ventures to offer this story to the boys and girls of the land, in the hope that it may afford them healthful pleasure. In which Clarence Esmond places himself in the hands of the Bright-eyed Goddess of A dventure, and entrusted by that Deity to the care of a Butcher s Boy, NA morning early in September, the sun was shining brightly upon the village of Mc Gregor. Nestled in a coulee between two hills, one rising squarely and rock-ribbed, lacking only the illusion of windows to give it the appearance of a ruined castle, the other to the northwest, sloping gently upwards, and crowned at the summit with a number of villas, Mc Gregor, running down to the Mississippi River, was as pretty a town as Iowa could boast. On this bright particular morning, an overgrown youth was sitting on the boat-landing, his feet dangling above the water, his face glooming darkly. Master A be Thompson, age sixteen, was troubled in spirit. He was homeless. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (United States. New York has Broadway with its famous whit...)
United States. New York has Broadway with its famous white lights; Chicago, which is nothing if not big, has Halsted Street, the longest, or, as a Chicagoan would say, the biggest street in the world. But most wonderful of all is Canal Streetj the sunny, the wide, the gay Canal Street in New Orleans. Such was the opinion of a roguish-eyed, handsome, dark-complexioned young man as he sauntered along one sunny day in the opening year of the twentieth century. He was slightly above middle height, stockily built, and, by way of contrast to the men, women and children who passed him by, clothed in rather severe black. His dress was the dress of a cleric; his face that of one who had grown into manhood but remained nevertheless a boy. Canal Street is the great procession ground of the United States. Monday morning in January I was sitting at my desk in the school-office, steehng myself to deal with those little girls of the school who had not been present at the Sunday Mass. It was a gloomy day and a cold. Outside a goodly number of the Cincinnati street-cleaning department with shovels and wagons were busy carting away the heavy snowfall of the previous Saturday. Presently there was a timid knock. Come in. Enters a little girl of seven in sore distress. Well, Sarah, what is the matter? Father, please, I didnt go to Mass. I know that. Why? Please, Father, my shoes were at the shoemaker s, and he didnt have them ready till this morning. He was too busy all day Saturday to sole them. I knew that Sarah was one of seven children; that the father earned thirteen dollars a week; and that the poor mother had more than she could do to make ends meet. Very good, Sarah, I said. He put his hand, as he ceased speaking, caressingly upon his fathers shoulder. With rude and unnatural violence the man caught the boys arm and threw it off. Don tbe a baby, Bob. Get out, I say. As he spoke, the man seized the boy by the shoulders and almost threw him out. The boy stumbled as he touched the ground and fell. Ouch! he cried, and slowly picked himself up. Now you neednt pretend you re hurt, cried the elder, harshly, as writh stiff awkward4 ness he alighted from the machine. I want no more baby acts. I dont have to pretend, pa; Ive got a bruise on my knee, and it hurts like fun. Suddenly a small circle of fairy light shot out, cutting into the palpable darkness. The circle moved about swiftly till it focussed upon a rather fat boy with a very rueful face, who was holding his right knee with one hand and rubbing it with the other. A lso, it revealed the harsh features of the man himself, who was pointing the flashlight directly at the boys (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ...road to Sykesville. He reached the village before it was fairly light, and, to the no small disgust of many of the sleepy inhabitants, succeeded in learning that Peters had not set foot in the village. By the time he had finished these inquiries, the dawn had grown to that sweet, soft, almost sacred light which is the immediate forerunner of sunrise. Mr. Middleton concluded that Peters was somewhere between the college and Sykesville; and accordingly he started back for St. Maure's slowly, carefully; not taking the road, but riding far and wide to right and left of the direct course, and examining every nook and recess which, in his judgment, Peters might have chosen for the night's shelter. In this fashion, he had made about a mile and a half of his homeward journey, when he came upon three hay-stacks standing close together. He rode up to them, and, on turning to the farther side, saw Peters lying upon the earth, with his face to the ground. Thanking God heartily, Mr. Middleton jumped from his horse, and caught the boy in his arms. The sun was just then freeing its lower rim from tiie under-world, as Mr. Middleton, looking into the boy's face, gave a low cry of horror. Peters was gagged. The fate he had designed for Tom and Harry he had met himself. Bound and gagged, Peters had spent the night in the open air! '. CHAPTER XIII.; AV WHICH ARE SET DOWN THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF A RUNAWAY. OETERS had just torn Percy's photographs, and I was about to destroy his precious packet of letters, when the entrance of Richards brought his despicable bit of spite-work to a sudden end. On leaving the study-hall, the young thief found his way stealthily into the garden, and, sneaking along the walls of the infirmary building, crawled through a hole in...

Uhc Waaer of (B eraifc) IR ourfee, A CHRISTMAS STORY. I. It was five minutes after nine on the morning of December 23d, when a small boy, with an expression akin to the pathetic upon his smug features, entered the Second Academic classroom of Marquette College, Milwaukee, and handed his teacher this note: 9:04 A.M. Gerald OR ourke, late. Please admit. A. MOSHER, S.J. Mr. Lawton read this communication with a frown. He was impatient of late-comers, as are all earnest teachers. His frown quickly disappeared, however, as a grin at once cheerful and deprecating came upon Gerald supturned (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Francis James Finn was born on October 4, 1859 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. He was the son of John and Mary (Whyte) Finn.
In 1876 he entered St. Louis University, and a year later joined the Society of Jesus, though poor health deferred the official date of entry until March 24, 1879. From the Jesuit Novitiate at Florissant, Missouri, he went in 1881 to St. Mary’s College, Kansas, and thence, two years later, to the Jesuit house of philosophical and theological studies at Woodstock, Maryland.
The continued delicacy of his health necessitated this somewhat irregular course, and delayed the completion of his training until 1894. Meanwhile he had been ordained a priest by Cardinal Gibbons (June 29, 1891), and had taught in St. Xavier’s College, Cincinnati, and Marquette College, Milwaukee, Wis. His career is almost an index to the number of Jesuit institutions then existing. St. Mary’s College, at that time an obscure and struggling preparatory school, furnished the young Jesuit professor with material which he developed into a series of stories for boys. In 1904 he served as the first director of the St. Xavier Commercial School for girls, which offered a two-year course of study including stenography, book-keeping, and typesetting.
