Francis Haar was a Hungarian socio-photographer, later became renowned graphic artist and book designer.

Background

Francis Haar was born in 1908 in Czematfalu, Hungary.

Education

He received a Master of Photography degree from the National Academy of Industrial Arts in Budapest, Hungary.

Career

A lecturer in photography at the Art Department of the University of Hawaii (1964-75), he was previously owner of Haar Photo, an art and motion picture production studio in Tokyo (1940-56). He also owned Haar Studio in Paris (1937-39) and Budapest, Hungary (1934-37).

He has made several films, including Holaulea, Honolulu Academy of Arts (1961), Ukiyoe, Japanese Print, for the Art Institute of Chicago (1959), and The Arts of Japan, for the U.S. Information Agency in Tokyo (1953).
