Frank Northen Magill was born on November 21, 1907, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
Frank studied at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Magill devoted his career to producing reference books, creating such volumes, as "Masterplots", "Cyclopedia of World Authors", "Cyclopedia of Literary Charters", "Magill's Survey of Cinema, Foreign Language Films" and others. In his early career, he was a partner in Bostwick & Magill. After spending several years as a freelance writer from 1938 to 1941, he began working as a freelance editor in 1947. His editorship includes such works, as "Magill’s Quotations in Context", "Great Events from History", "Survey of Science Fiction Literature" and "Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature".
During World War II, Frank served in the United States Army Air Forces. In 1949, he founded and became a director of Salem Press. Frank ran Salem Press until his retirement in 1996.
In 1966, he became a director of Salem Audiovisual. Beginning in the late 1960's, Magill presided over a support group at the University of Southern California and taught library science there as well.
