Frank McKay practiced law in Holyoke, a city in Hampden County in west-central Massachusetts that lies on the Connecticut River just north of Chicopee and Springfield. Settled in 1725 and incorporated as a separate township in 1850, Holyoke began to develop industrially after dams were built across the river in the late 1840s, and its canal system attracted paper and textile mills.
His legal work was carried out as a partner of Philip J. McKay. His practice covered general civil matters, with particular attention to estate planning, probate, real estate, corporation, domestic relations and taxation law. Holyoke's later economy diversified into health care, higher education, publishing and manufacturing, reflecting a broader shift away from the mill industries that had shaped the city.
