Haar began his career as a teacher in public schools in Pittsburgh from 1928 to 1942, moving to the University of Florida, Gainesville, as an associate professor of health education in 1946. In 1949 he joined the faculty of the University of Oregon, Eugene, as full professor of health education and department chair, remaining there for the rest of his career.
His first book was Principles of Community Health (1961), followed by Health and Physical Education for the Elementary Classroom Teacher (1964), and, with Miriam L. Tuck, Health (1969).
