Fred Lawrence Guiles was born on November 17, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, the United States.
Guiles was the biographer of such Hollywood figures as Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda, and Andy Warhol. His first book, the 1969 Norma Jean: The Life of Marilyn Monroe, became a best seller and was subsequently translated into fourteen languages. His Marion Davies was published in 1972, followed by Hanging on in Paradise in 1975. In 1984 Guiles put forth a revised version of his Monroe biography titled Legend: The Life and Death of Marilyn Monroe. His last work, Andy Warhol: Loner at The Ball, appeared in 1989.
