Fujioka Ichisuke was born in 1857.
He was the predecessor of Tokyo University in 1881 and was appointed an assistant professor of same. It was he who lit the Okura Gumi store on Ginza street in Tokyo with arc lights in 1882, thereby causing a sensation. After repeated visits to Europe and America, he became president of the Tokyo Electric Railway Co. and later established to Tokyo Electric Co. He contributed much to the establishment of the electric bulb manufacturing and other electric industries in Japan.
