Background
Ietaka came from an illustrious background, his father being Provisional Middle Councillor Fujiwara no Mitsutaka, and his mother the daughter of Assistant Master of the Dowager Empress’ Household Office Fujiwara no Sanekane , while having Tsutsumi Middle Councillor Fujiwara no Kanesuke, and his daughter Murasaki Shikibu among his ancestors on his father’s side.
Career
The son of Mitsutaka, he was one of the compilers of Shin-Kokin-wakashu, a famous anthology. Studied waka under Shunzei Fujiwara. A prolific poet, he was admired as the two greatest poets, the other being Sadaie Fujiwara. Favored by Emperor Gotoba. Was also a great calligrapher. Anthology of his waka poems is called Mibu-shu.
Connections
He was also reputedly Jakuren’s son-in-law. His name is often pronounced Karyu, Chinese fashion.
